BOTÍN DE LA FIERA, digo, FERIA DEL LIBRO

¡Me encanta!

 Singapore Secrets

Publisher: eLectio Publishing

When Julia meets handsome Gabriel Davenport, she keeps her true purpose for being in Singapore a secret. The friendship that develops quickly evolves into something much deeper.

Julia marvels that she’s traveled halfway around the world to find love with an American man. But will that love endure when she discovers that Gabriel is a former Special Forces sergeant hired by her father to protect her?

Meet the mastermind

Irene Onorato was born and raised in Bronx, New York. Her father, a first-generation American whose parents were born in Italy, was an Army veteran who had served with the 178th combat engineers during WWII. He told numerous stories of battles, hardships, tragedies and triumphs. The glimpses he gave into the hearts of many American warriors would later become the inspiration for much of Irene’s writings.

In 1972, a few months after graduating high school, Irene met James Onorato, a soldier who had just returned from Vietnam. After dating two weeks, they married, raised three children, and are still happily married today.

Irene and James, both radiation protection technicians, retired from the nuclear power industry in 2014 and now reside in Louisiana.

TWoPS RDL Banner

Menuda combinación de portada etérea y título soñador, no he podido resistirme.

The Witch of Painted Sorrows - cover

We are absolutely captivated by THE WITCH OF PAINTED SORROWS and so excited to bring you the Release Day Launch for M.J. Rose's amazing new novel. THE WITCH OF PAINTED SORROWS is a historical gothic romantic suspense published by Atria, an imprint of Simon & Schuster. Check out the excerpt below, buy a copy for yourself (and a friend!), then check out the giveaway M.J. Rose is holding to celebrate the release!!

 THE WITCH OF PAINTED SORROWS

Synopsis: Possession. Power. Passion. New York Times bestselling novelist M. J. Rose creates her most provocative and magical spellbinder yet in this gothic novel set against the lavish spectacle of 1890s Belle Époque Paris. Sandrine Salome flees New York for her grandmother's Paris mansion to escape her dangerous husband, but what she finds there is even more menacing. The house, famous for its lavish art collection and elegant salons, is mysteriously closed up. Although her grandmother insists it's dangerous for Sandrine to visit, she defies her and meets Julien Duplessi, a mesmerizing young architect.

Together they explore the hidden night world of Paris, the forbidden occult underground and Sandrine's deepest desires. Among the bohemians and the demi-monde, Sandrine discovers her erotic nature as a lover and painter. Then darker influences threaten--her cold and cruel husband is tracking her down and something sinister is taking hold, changing Sandrine, altering her. She's become possessed by La Lune: A witch, a legend, and a sixteenth-century courtesan, who opens up her life to a darkness that may become a gift or a curse This is Sandrine's "wild night of the soul," her odyssey in the magnificent city of Paris, of art, love and witchery.

ENJOY AN EXCERPT

Four months ago I snuck into Paris on a wet, chilly January night like a criminal, hiding my face in my shawl, taking extra care to be sure I wasn’t followed. I stood on the stoop of my grandmother’s house and lifted the hand-shaped bronze door knocker and let it drop. The sound of the metal echoed inside. Her home was on a lane blocked off from rue des Saints-Pères by wide wooden double doors. Maison de la Lune, as it was called, was one of a half dozen four-story mid-eighteenth- century stone houses that shared a courtyard that backed up onto rue du Dragon.

I let the door knocker fall again. Light from a street lamp glinted off the golden metal. It was a strange object. Usually on these things the bronze hand’s palm faced the door. But this one was palm out, almost warning the visitor to reconsider requesting entrance. The knocker had obsessed me ten years before when I’d visited as a fifteen-year-old. The engravings on the finely modeled female palm included etched stars, phases of the moon, planets, and other archaic symbols. When I’d asked about it once, my grandmother had said it was older than the house, but she didn’t know how old exactly or what the ciphers meant. Where was the maid? Grand-mère, one of Paris’s celebrated courtesans, hosted lavish salons on Tuesday, Thursday, and many Saturday evenings, and at this time of day was usually upstairs, preparing her toilette: dusting poudre de riz on her face and décolletage, screwing in her opale de feu earrings, and wrapping her signature rope of the same blazing orange stones around her neck. The strand of opal beads was famous. It had belonged to a Russian empress and was known as Les Incendies. The stones were the same color as my grandmother’s hair and the high- lights in her topaz eyes.

She was known by that name—L’Incendie, they called her, The Fire. We had the same color eyes, but mine almost never flashed like hers. When I was growing up, I kept checking in the mirror, hoping the opal sparks that I only saw occasionally would intensify. I wanted to be just like her, but my father said it was just as well my eyes weren’t on fire because it wasn’t only her coloring that had inspired her name but also her temper, and that wasn’t a thing to covet. It wasn’t until I was fifteen years old and witnessed it myself that I understood what he’d meant. I let the hand of fate fall again. Even if Grand-mère was upstairs and couldn’t hear the knocking, the maid would be downstairs, organizing the refreshments for the evening. I’d seen her so many nights, polishing away last smudges on the silver, holding the Baccarat glasses over a pot of steaming water and then wiping them clean to make sure they gleamed.

Dusk had descended. The air had grown cold, and now it was beginning to rain. Fat, heavy drops dripped onto my hat and into my eyes. And I had no umbrella. That’s when I did what I should have done from the start—I stepped back and looked up at the house. The darkened windows set into the limestone facade indicated there were no fires burning and no lamps lit inside. My grandmother was not in residence. And neither, it appeared, was her staff. I almost wished the concierge had needed to open the porte cochère for me; he might have been able to tell me where my grandmother was. For days now I had managed to keep my sanity only by thinking of this moment. All I had to do, I kept telling myself, was find my way here, and then together, my grandmother and I could mourn my father and her son, and she would help me figure out what I should do now that I had run away from New York City. If she wasn’t here, where was I to go? I had other family in Paris, but I had no idea where they lived. I’d only met them here, at my grandmother’s house, when I’d visited ten years previously. I had no friends in the city. The rain was soaking through my clothes. I needed to find shelter. But where? A restaurant or café? Was there one nearby? Or should I try and find a hotel? Which way should I go to get a carriage? Was it even safe to walk alone here at night? What choice did I have?

Picking up my suitcase, I turned, but before I could even step into the courtyard, I saw an advancing figure. A bedraggled-looking man, wearing torn and filthy brown pants and an overcoat that had huge, bulging pockets, staggered toward me. Every step he took rang out on the stones. He’s just a beggar who intends no harm, I told myself. He’s just look- ing for scraps of food, for a treasure in the garbage he’d be able to sell. But what if I was wrong? Alone with him in the darkening court- yard, where could I go? In my skirt and heeled boots, could I even outrun him?

¿A Wicked Choice? No estaría mal ;o)

A Wicked Thing
Publisher: HarperTeen
Release Date: February 24th 2015

Rhiannon Thomas's dazzling debut novel is a spellbinding reimagining of Sleeping Beauty and what happens after happily ever after.
One hundred years after falling asleep, Princess Aurora wakes up to the kiss of a handsome prince and a broken kingdom that has been dreaming of her return. All the books say that she should be living happily ever after. But as Aurora understands all too well, the truth is nothing like the fairy tale.
Her family is long dead. Her "true love" is a kind stranger. And her whole life has been planned out by political foes while she slept.
As Aurora struggles to make sense of her new world, she begins to fear that the curse has left its mark on her, a fiery and dangerous thing that might be as wicked as the witch who once ensnared her. With her wedding day drawing near, Aurora must make the ultimate decision on how to save her kingdom: marry the prince or run.
Rhiannon Thomas weaves together vivid scenes of action, romance, and gorgeous gowns to reveal a richly imagined world … and Sleeping Beauty as she’s never been seen before.

MY OPINION OF A WICKED THING

The catch

The fact that Aurora's story starts right after the spell-breaking kiss is higly appealing. So much plot and secrets to discover!

The style

Evocative. It made me easily understand the bewilderment Aurora feels after awakening from her century-old slumber. Surrounded by strangers, bereft of all the people she loved and the places and times that meant something to her, her plight only intensifies when the real reasons concerning her importance surface and threaten her.

The twists

I liked it very much that there is so much mystery and secrets in the land where Aurora has awoken into. Does anyone care about her? Or only plan to use her as a pawn in their dark schemes?

The romance

A pinch that entices. I promise there's plenty of possibilities here.

I've enjoyed Aurora's interactions with other characters. All of them have their own hidden agendas and the fun is in finding out the nuances and dangers and veiled truths. The aloof queen, duty-bound Rodric, insecure Isabelle, the oh-so-charming-bad-boy Finnegan, alluring Tristan.

Even before the curse that put her to sleep, Aurora had been trapped in a tower by her fearful parents who wanted to protect her. You can feel her need to taste life and adventure! I enjoyed seeing her grow more confident on her desires and protests. And that's how she meets Tristan!

The author has made a good decision when she chose a heroic story for a girl who's not a heroine. She's an ordinary girl amidst extraordinary circumstances. Or is she?

From a cursed-induced sleep through a path that's been predesigned for her, she has to face all kinds of expectations and challenges. Will she be up to the task or will she disappoint the people who's lost hope and the land that's lost magic?

This is a story of finding your place in a confusing world and the sacrifices that must be made in the way. I could relate to the main character. She's torn between duty and desire. After all, we've all been there. Well, not in a castle brimming with politics, unrest, scheming, a pinch of magic and a threat of dragons, but... we've been in the princess' shoes, at least. Is it the right thing to follow the rules or to break them and find freedom?

With a steady and fairy tale atmosphere, A Wicked Thing strikes me as a siren call for freedom. Aurora is a girl without a choice that looks for herself in the middle of lies, betrayal, death and power struggle. I really liked her growth as a character, her wonderful interaction with prince Finnegan (is he evil or an antihero?).

It was really interesting to see the legend twisted into a fantasy nightmare of difficult choices, a dreary royal wedding and the impossibility of a happily ever after. Every character plays an important role and the mystery that dwells inside Aurora is cause for wanting to read that ending that comes too soon and too marked by tragedy and a promise of adventure. I'm very curious to know what comes after this wicked beginning.

Favourite quote:

"I'm lost", she said. "Me too", he said. "Maybe we can be lost together"

VIOLA CARR

Viola Carr was born in Australia, but wandered into darkest London one foggy October evening and never found her way out. She now devours countless history books and dictates fantastical novels by gaslight, accompanied by classical music and the snoring of her slumbering cat. She loves history, and pops down to London’s many historical sites whenever she gets the chance.  She likes steampunk, and thought it would be cool to investigate wacky crimes with crazy gadgets…just so long as her heroine was the creator of said wacky gadgets: a tinkerer, edgy, with a dash of mad scientist.

My Opinion of The Diabolical Miss Hyde

After an engrossing first chapter, I was happily hooked. Not only is it a great start, but it also embodies the main elements of the novel. In one sweep, we find mystery, gory murder, British debonair, magical persecution, and inquisitorial law enforcement. Also, let's not forget the well-adapted steampunk technology, dark foreboding in a political atmosphere, animated dialogues and attractive characters rich in personality.

Can you imagine Doctor Jekyll having a daughter? And with the same ailment he had? Wow! I call that brilliant thinking. I loved the idea as much as the top-notch cover. Clever and vivid writing style expertly dosed with sarcastic wit brings alive a story around Eliza Jekyll and her crazy inner alter ego.

A violent, blood-thirsty, foul-mouthed presence at the back of her mind pushing against the limits of her resistance to gain the upper hand, Lizzy Hyde wants her own chance at freedom. An elixir is all that separates their minds and their bodies, both vastly different. This split personality is the foundation of the story and it's so well developed that I came to love both characters. They even have distinct speech as Lizzie speaks her mind with bold and uneducated words.

There are many things I loved about this story. For starters, the gruesome murders Jack-the-Ripper-style that Eliza must investigate alongside Inspector Harley and irritating captain Lafayette. I relished how intricately obscure the plot is and what lurid, demented places it takes Eliza to find out who the culprit is. We never suspect until the gloriously violent end when all the secrets, mysteries and dangers coalesce. Eliza and Lizzy fight each other but in truth there are so many more important perils. London is a den of discontent, of political and social turmoil, where the law persecutes science and criminal lords lurk in every filthy corner. I loved the atmosphere, half-historical, half-fantastical, and the clever dialogues enraptured me.

And the characters! From the women who share an existence to the bunch of men who support her commandeering of the scene, all appealing in so many ways. Captain Lafayette, all charm and secrets; Inspector Harley, stout and noble; criminal Mr. Todd, a Victorian Hannibal Lecter who can steal your heart as swiftly as your life. Intriguing, all of them and so excitingly different. The dynamics that occur between the girls and these men are extremely entertaining, fun and cunning.

The author's prose is rich, colourful, twisting in the raw battle that rages within Eliza against the carnal lure of being someone else less constricted by society. I had fun getting to know Lizzy, she's a force to be reckoned with, opinionated and reckless. Surprisingly, Eliza is not a demure lady that pales in comparison. She's as strong a character as her wilder self. Eliza is smart and shrewd in a world full of ugly secrets and violent men.

Indeed, the author weaves a darkly seductive atmosphere in a London full of black deeds, conspiratorial denizens, murderers on the prowl and so many evil desires craving to be unleashed. I'd love to continue reading these two women's adventures because this case might have been painfully solved, but their personal struggle is far from over. There are still threats that purse them and men who love them to death. Isn't that any reader's dream?
