The Devil's Thief tour: Entrevista y Sorteo

ENTREVISTA: THE READER IN EVERY AUTHOR

What are you reading these days?
I’ve been reading a lot of research for Book 3 of The Last Magician series. So…nothing overly page-turning, unfortunately. Recently, though, I’ve read a few great books! I really loved The Astonishing Color of After by Emily X.R. Pan. And I got to read an early copy of Peternelle van Arsdale’s The Cold Is In Her Bones and Nicki Pau Preto’s Crown of Feathers, and I loved both of them. When they’re out later, your readers should definitely check them out.

What two books would you recommend other readers and why?
One of my very favorite books is Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried. It isn’t YA. It’s actually about young soldiers in the Vietnam War, but it’s such an engaging read. The reason I love it and will always love it is that it has this beautiful way of explaining how the story-truth of fiction can be just as real—and sometimes more so—than the actual just-the-facts truth.

Another really wonderful book is American Panda by Gloria Chao. The humor and heart in this one is everything a reader could want in a book.

In what ways have the books you've read influenced how you write?
I have a background in studying literature, so a lot of the books I’ve read were what a lot of people would consider literary fiction. But even with the more literary books, I have always loved books that play with the idea of what is real—books where reality could be more magical than the surface shows. A lot of people might not think that literary books can do this, but magical realism and post modern fiction—writers like Toni Morrison, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Tim O’Brien and others. Their dabbling with magic and the way that reality can be more fantastic and unbelievable sometimes has always intrigued me, and I think that’s informed my books.

I also love really lyrical and poetic writers. That’s probably because of my literature background. But writers like the modernists (think 1919-1940) who played with the way writers represented reality really inform the way I think about using images and other literary devices in my books. Writers like Fitzgerald and Kay Boyle and poets like William Carlos Williams or T.S. Eliot.

Finally, I’m a huge huge fan of romance, especially historical romances, like those written by Sarah MacLean and Julia Quinn. I love the way they create these really three-dimensional characters. So much of romance follows the same basic plot lines, but the individuality of the characters is what makes or breaks a story for me, and I think reading a lot of romance helped me understand how to create characters of my own.

And, if you could ask a question to my blog's followers, that would be awesome.
I’d love to know what your readers love to read!

Stop the Magician.
Steal the book.
Save the future.

Waking Isabella + sorteo internacional

Citas favoritas / Favourite Quotes:
To extinguish a life was to kill a small piece of beauty.

A part of her would remain behind, and given time, someone would remember... and beauty would be awakened.

If you looked hard enough, you could find beauty in the most unusual places.

There was something timeless and reassuring in knowing art endured while human lives were so fragile and frail.

Beauty is perhaps a means of arousing the senses.

Always remember that creative expression is the ultimate freedom.

Book Title: Waking Isabella: Because beauty can't sleep forever by Melissa Muldoon
Category: Adult Fiction, 250 pages
Genre: General Fiction
Publisher: Matta Press
Release date: December 2017
Tour dates: Feb 19 to March 23, 2018
Content Rating: PG-13 + M (The story begins with violent rape and murder scene, touches on themes of miscarriage, murder, Nazi violence during war, adultery)

Book Description:

Waking Isabella is a story about uncovering hidden beauty that, over time, has been lost, erased, or suppressed. It also weaves together several love stories as well as a few mysteries. Nora, an assistant researcher, is a catalyst for resolving the puzzle of a painting that has been missing for decades. Set in Arezzo, a small Tuscan town, the plot unfolds against the backdrop of the city’s antique trade and the fanfare and pageantry of its medieval jousting festival. While filming a documentary about Isabella de’ Medici—the Renaissance princess who was murdered by her husband—Nora begins to connect with the lives of two remarkable women from the past. Unraveling the stories of Isabella, the daughter of a fifteenth-century Tuscan duke, and Margherita, a young girl trying to survive the war in Nazi-occupied Italy, Nora begins to question the choices that have shaped her own life up to this point. As she does, hidden beauty is awakened deep inside of her, and she discovers the keys to her creativity and happiness. It is a story of love and deceit, forgeries and masterpieces—all held together by the allure and intrigue of a beautiful Tuscan ghost.

MY OPINION

Ever since I discovered Italian art in school, the Renaissance  has been my favourite period in History. Alas, I could not pass the opportunity to read this book where past and present mingle in a quest for beauty.

This contemporary story is flavoured with Italian culture, lost dreams that fight to keep alive, sensual longings and the feminine spirit in search of happiness and freedom.

The light writing makes the novel fluid and easy to read, yet it still manages to convey beauty and heart. Through the eyes of a modern woman, we get to experience the long-delayed return to the land of her youth, her first and most honest dreams, before pragmatism and external influences stopped them from being realized.

What I couldn't resist is that the female character, Nora, is inspired almost by fate to take the slackened reins of her life and take the leap by a historical figure. The Medici family has been a favourite of mine since childhood. After all, they are the epitome of art patrons, cunning business leaders and rulers of cities.

The plot unfolds as Nora embarks on a creative venture in Arezzo, home of interesting and dramatic events that tie into World War II. Through her wildly imaginative eyes, scenes from the past come alive with emotion and turmoil. I loved those.

Love and tragedy seem to go hand in hand. It is heartening to read about people whose unhappiness, despite mistakes and successes alike, shows them where their true aspirations lie. Women of strength and the men they love are as much a feature of this lovely novel as art, courage, people, and how they all interact to create a memorable read.

Whether you're particularly fond of Italy or not, it will prompt you to pack your things and pay a visit to this enchanting land. I really felt like going to Arezzo and recreate all those wonderful anecdotes of hidden art, reawakened romance, and a freedom that's never too late to claim.

ABOUT THE MASTERMIND

Melissa Muldoon is the Studentessa Matta—the crazy linguist! In Italian, “matta” means “crazy” or “impassioned.” Melissa has a B.A. in fine arts, art history and European history from Knox College, a liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, as well as a master’s degree in art history from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. She has also studied painting and art history in Florence.

Melissa promotes the study of Italian language and culture through her dual-language blog, Studentessa Matta (studentessamatta.com). Melissa began the Matta blog to improve her command of the language and to connect with other language learners. It has since grown to include a podcast, “Tutti Matti per l’Italiano,” and the Studentessa Matta YouTube channel. Melissa also created Matta Italian Language Immersion Tours, which she co-leads with Italian partners in Italy.

Waking Isabella is Melissa’s second novel and follows Dreaming Sophia, published in 2016. In this new novel about Italy, the reader is taken on another art history adventure, inspired by Melissa’s experiences living and traveling in Italy, specifically Arezzo, as well as her familiarity with the language and art. For more information about Waking Isabella and links to Melissa’s blogs and social media sites, visit www.MelissaMuldoon.com.

As a student, Melissa lived in Florence with an Italian family. She studied art history and painting and took beginner Italian classes. When she returned home, she threw away her Italian dictionary, assuming she’d never need it again, but after launching a successful design career and starting a family, she realized something was missing in her life. That “thing” was the connection she had made with Italy and the friends who live there. Living in Florence was indeed a life-changing event. Wanting to reconnect with Italy, she decided to start learning the language again from scratch. As if indeed possessed by an Italian muse, she bought a new Italian dictionary and began her journey to fluency—a path that has led her back to Italy many times and enriched her life in countless ways. Now, many dictionaries and grammar books later, she dedicates her time to promoting Italian language studies, further travels in Italy, and sharing her stories and insights about Italy with others. When Melissa is not traveling in Italy, she lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Melissa designed and illustrated the cover art for Waking Isabella and Dreaming Sophia. She also curates the Dreaming Sophia blog and Pinterest site: The Art of Loving Italy. Preciosa cubierta: Everything Under the Sun

EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN: A Novel
Jessica Redmerski
---
Fiction & Literature | Post-Apocalyptic | Suspense | Romance
683 pages
Release day: August, 28

Thais Fenwick was eleven-years-old when civilization fell, devastated by a virus that killed off the majority of the world’s population. For seven years, Thais and her family lived in a community of survivors deep in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. But when her town is attacked by raiders, she and her blind sister are taken away to the East-Central Territory where she is destined to live the cruel and unjust kind of life her late mother warned her about.

Atticus Hunt is a troubled soldier in Lexington City who has spent the past seven years trying to conform to the vicious nature of men in a post-apocalyptic society. He knows that in order to survive, he must abandon his morals and his conscience and become like those he is surrounded by. But when he meets Thais, morals and conscience win out over conformity, and he risks his rank and his life to help her. They escape the city and set out together on a long and perilous journey to find safety in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Struggling to survive in a world without electricity, food, shelter, and clean water, Atticus and Thais shed their fear of growing too close, and they fall hopelessly in love. But can love survive in such dark times, or is it fated to die with them?

*

¡Suena genial!<3

WHAT SHE THINKS

Tell us a little about why you write in so many different genres. Does it work for you?

I can’t stick to one genre. I love writing all types of stories. Does it work for me? Yes and no. Yes, because I’d start to feel claustrophobic if I had to write in the same genre all the time. No, because I think it confuses my readers that I write everything under the same author name. I regret that decision to this day. My advice to authors considering it: Don’t make this mistake!

What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

I never stop writing for the day at the end of a scene or sentence, but instead right in the middle of them. This helps me prevent writer’s block and keeps my mind fresh.

When it comes to writing, what are your strong points? What are your weaknesses?

I love to write dialogue. It feels and flows more natural to me. I feel like I struggle a little more with description, because I’m impatient and sometimes it feels like the description is slowing me down. But I pace myself! If I didn’t, the entire novel would be one giant conversation.

Who is your favorite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?

I don’t have a favorite – I have several! Anne Rice and Neil Gaiman I have admired for many years. I love Rice’s deep, descriptive style and Gaiman’s unique ideas. But I also love Paullina Simons and Cormac McCarthy – there are just so many! And, of course, there’s J.K. Rowling, but I don’t really have to name her, do I? Isn’t she everybody’s favorite by default? 😊

Is there one book that has had an impact on not only your writing, but on you personally?

That would be THE VAMPIRE ARMAND by Anne Rice. It’s a book that I’ve read four or five times and the one that really inspired me to try to become a published author.

Tell us your favorite quote.

“Love is a trick that Nature plays on us to get us to reproduce.” – Callisto – Xena Warrior Princess. I’m not against love, I’ve always just been awed by that quote. Not to mention, Callisto was awesome!

EXCERPT #5: “TAKE IT.”

“Are you still angry?” I asked him.
“About what?”
“Giving the bread away to those people.”
He shook his head against the quilt.
“No, Thais, I’m not still angry.”
After a moment, he said, “Thais?”
“Mmm-hmm?”
“Don’t ask me to kiss you again.”
I paused, tensed. “Why not?” I was afraid of the answer.
We continued to look up at the stars. Behind us the horses whickered and their tails swished about. A light breeze combed through the trees, carrying the bitter and sweet scents of pine and honeysuckle with it.
Finally, Atticus answered, “Because whatever you want from me, Thais, I’d rather you just take it.”
I wanted to cry.
I smiled to myself instead.
