Últimamente, no paro de descubrir joyas como SHADOWS OF ASPHODEL, de Karen Kincy. Me encandiló la portada con esa guerrera con la
espada en mano mientras tras ella flota un dirigible sobre una ciudad europea. ¡Un dirigible! En cuanto leí la sinopsis, estaba atrapada.
Ardis es una mercenaria que trabaja para los archimagos de
Viena. Aunque es americana, tiene rasgos asiáticos, convirtiéndola en una
extranjera allí donde va. Sin embargo, sus cualidades como guerrera le han
hecho una experta en el campo de batalla. Allí se cruza con Wendel, un
nigromante herido pero aún muy peligroso. A pesar del hostil encuentro, se lo
lleva prisionero. No le vendría mal un rescate que ayudase a sus finanzas.
Aunque Wendel, con su actitud sarcástica y casi al borde de la muerte, no va a
ser un enigma fácil de resolver. La orden de Asphodel es dueña del nigromante y
está compuesta por implacables asesinos que están poniendo en jaque a una
Europa en plena turbulencia política. Quieren recuperar a su esclavo a toda
costa y enviarán asesinos tras su pista hasta que recobren su presa o muera en
el proceso.
Me he enamorado. Así de simple. Una lectora puede estar
segura de que le va a gustar algo, pero luego todo depende de varios factores.
En este caso se han cumplido con creces. Me he encontrado con personajes
carismáticos que han resultado interesantes desde el inicio. Su carácter e
inteligencia van acompañados por un pasado que se va desenvolviendo poco a
poco, bien entretejido con la trama que cada vez se complica más. Los diálogos
son ingeniosos, mientras que las descripciones son ajustadas pero ricas en
detalle. Viajamos desde Transilvania a Viena y Constantinopla a través de
trenes y dirigibles en una Europa alternativa a principios del siglo veinte.
Debido a la creación de una muralla mágica, el uso de armas de fuego es
imposible por lo que los rebeldes se enfrentan a los archimagos mediante
espadas y arcos. La situación en el viejo continente es un polvorín de política
precaria, ambiciones a precio de oro y atentados y escaramuzas que apuntan a
una guerra inminente.
Mientras tanto, Wendel es capaz de resucitar a los muertos
para que luchen por él. Ardis siente una profunda desconfianza ante este poder,
pero a medida que conoce el gran sufrimiento que arrastra Wendel desde su
niñez, no puede evitar el acercamiento emocional. Así los dos se ven inmersos
en una carrera por salvar la vida de la amenaza de la orden. Perseguidos por
asesinos a cada paso, Wendel jura venganza y Ardis se enamora de este héroe
maldito que no tiene escapatoria. Su historia de amor es preciosa aunque
durísima. Hay maltrato y tortura, aunque también unas escenas íntimas que suben
la temperatura en cualquier noche de invierno. Por otro lado, una de las
mejores bazas de la novela es su ambientación semi-histórica adornada con
elementos de techología steampunk. Me han encantado los aparatos mitad cacharros
mitad magia. Tiene muchas escenas de acción en distintos contextos, además de
luchas de espada y confrontaciones dramáticas. El pasado de los protagonistas
se vuelve contra ellos hasta formar un nudo corredizo en los capítulos finales.
Ahí estaba yo gritando "¡esto no puede estar ocurriendo!" Me comía
las uñas en el último capítulo de pura angustia. En definitiva, estoy muy
satisfecha de haber leído esta gran aventura romántica con intensos rasgos de
fantasía oscura, steampunk e historia alternativa con magia incluida.
Recomendada 100%.
Curiosamente, se encuentra dentro de los parámetros de un
subgénero steampunk llamado Dieselpunk: combina la filosofía de los años 20, 30 y 40 con
las sensibilidades modernas.

Shadows of Asphodel includes steampunk,
alternative history, fantasy, adventure... why did you choose such a blend of
genres?
When I started writing Shadows of
Asphodel, I knew I wanted to write a historical fantasy, but the exact time
was still blurry in my imagination. Once I did a little research, I fell in
love with the era right before World War One. The rest is alternate history. ;)
Las sombras de Asphodel incluye steampunk,
historia alternativa, fantasía, aventura… ¿por qué has mezclado tal variedad de
géneros?
Cuando comencé a escribir SoS, sabía que deseaba
escribir fantasía histórica, pero el periodo exacto no era más que un boceto.
Una vez que me documenté, quedé prendada de la época anterior a la primera
guerra mundial. El resto es historia alternativa ;)

Why did you make both characters revolve around death?
I wanted to start the story with two characters
who should be enemies. Ardis sees herself as the hero and sees Wendel as the
villain. She’s working as a peacekeeper for Austria-Hungary and stopping a war
from breaking out. He’s a necromancer running from his past and using the dead
to do his dirty work. They both deal with death every day. At first, Ardis
thinks that’s the only thing they have in common. Over the course of the story,
however, she has to face a lot of truths about Wendel—and about herself.

Mi intención era empezar la historia con dos
personajes que fueran enemigos. Ardis se considera la heroína mientras que
Wendel es el villano ante sus ojos. Trabaja como agente del orden para el Imperio
Austro-Húngaro para evitar que estalle la guerra. Él es un nigromante que huye
de su pasado al tiempo que usa a los muertos para hacer el trabajo sucio. Ambos
se enfrentan a la muerte cada día. Al principio, Artis cree que eso es lo único
que tienen en común. A lo largo de la historia, sin embargo, deberá afrontar

Despite the dark atmosphere and undertone, there
is plenty of room for steamy romance. Were you aiming for that stark contrast?
For Ardis and Wendel, their romance offers them a
hopeful future in a world where they might die tomorrow. When they fall for
each other, the danger of their lives leads to desperate passion.

Can you tell readers a little bit about other
books you've written?
Sure! I have a young adult paranormal series out
with Flux: Other, Bloodborn, and Foxfire. If you
like shapeshifters, mystery, and romance, check out these books. They can be
read out of order, since each one is narrated by a different shapeshifter
character. Gwen, the protagonist of Other, is half-pooka; then we
have Brock the werewolf; finally, Tavian the kitsune.

¡Por supuesto! Tengo una serie paranormal juvenil
que consta de los libros Other, Bloodborn y Foxfire. Si te gustan los

libro. Gwen, potagonista de Otro, is mitad pooka; luego tenemos a Brock el

What are you currently working on? Will there be
more of Ardis and Wendel or their world?
Yes, there will be more of Ardis and Wendel! I’m
writing the sequel,Storms of Lazarus, right now. It picks up right where
the first book left off. If you have already read the part with Project Lazarus
in the first book, then the title of the second one will make more sense.

¡Sí,
habrá más historias de Ardis y Wendel! Estoy escribiendo la continuación,

What's the last book you've read?
I’m reading The Night Circus by
Erin Morgenstern right now. The worldbuilding and descriptions in this book are
gorgeous, but I have no idea how it’s all going to turn out. (No spoilers!)

In your experience, what's one of the best things
about writing?
The absolute best thing about writing is that moment
where you think of an awesome plot twist or line of dialogue that evokes a
strong emotion. And you know that there are readers out there who will also
have this reaction to your story. It’s
like sharing a dream.
(My sentiments exactly. We all dream books together :o) )
Según tu experiencia, ¿cuál es una de las mayores
ventajas de escribir?
Lo mejor de escribir es, sin duda, ese momento en
que se te ocurre un giro argumental fabuloso o una línea de diálogo que evoca
una emoción intensa. Y sabes que los lectores tendrán esa misma reacción cuando
lean la historia. Es como compartir un sueño.
How do you celebrate it when you finish writing a
story?
First, I leap out of my chair and dance around my
office like a madwoman. Then, I check the kitchen to see if I can find any
cookies. After that, I try to take a break before I start writing the next
story. Not that I can always resist. ;)

terminado de escribir una historia?
En primer lugar, pego un
brinco desde mi silla y me pongo a bailar por mi oficina como una lunática. Luego miro
en la cocina por si hay galletas. Al final, intento tomarme un descanso antes
de abordar la próxima historia. Aunque no siempre resisto la tentación ;)

MY REVIEW
I loved it.
From the gorgeous cover to the dazzling synopsis, I was hooked on the dark
fantasy, the charismatic characters, the fast-paced plot, the European setting,
the sinister magic and the steampunk technology. I loved it all.
As I read on,
I had the growing feeling of satisfaction that happens when you find a story
you like more and more with every new scene, every new twist. I was biting my
nails nearing the end out of frustration. Then the last two chapters got me
screaming, "This cannot be happening!". That ending was full of drama
and anguish and hope. I loved it too. When the last page was turned, I was
craving for more.
Ardis is a
mercenary wielding a special kind of sword. She's in the payroll of the
Archmages, creators of the Hex, a magical wall that prevents the use of
gunfire. Hence the popularity of other weaponry in this early twentieth-century
Europe. Wendel is a necromancer wearing a special kind of cocky charm who
belongs to the Order of the Asphodel. They meet on the battlefield. Ardis takes
him prisoner with a good ransom in mind, but Wendel's masters are ruthless
assassins who will have him back even against his will. Thus starts a
neck-breaking race from Transylvania to Vienna to Constantinople to keep alive,
seek revenge and dodge political turmoil while they both try to outrun their
past.
The world-building
is good and solid. We learn about it, not by huge chunks of description, but
through action, lots of events and ever-so-appealing dialogue between the
characters. And what characters! I found them alluring as soon as they appeared
in action. From the first moment, everything that was going on and every little
bit that I knew about them was interesting. I was invested in their plight and
I wanted them to succeed.
The story is
gritty, not at all squeamish about death and danger. Despite the brewing war
and their bleak background, Ardis and Wendel find time for a steaming romance.
The plot thickens as they get to know each other, no matter how at odds their
relationship seems to be. They will push it against international politics,
swarms of assassins, conflicting emotions of their own and magic gone awry.
It's a
beautiful though very hard love story. I think Wendel is very complicated, but
in need of so much love. And Ardis is the most generous, brave woman that you
can admire because she risks it all for the man who deserves a chance to be
saved. All is not romance and erotic encounters in this well-crafted adventure,
though. I've had amazing variety to my heart's content. Steampunk technology
makes its way in an alternate history world where magic goes rampant and death
may happen on the battlefield as easily as in a chandelier-lit ballroom.
The author
manages to confer richness and detail to the world her characters inhabit
without burdening the reader. And the witty dialogue laces every character
interaction in between swashbuckling, techno-magical, impossible-to-survive
fights against the enemy. It's obvious that I enjoyed this novel a lot, so I'd
recommend it to readers of paranormal stories with a penchant for steampunk,
historical-flavoured dark romance.
