LAURA BICKLE. Autora de The Hallowed Ones y The Outside.

What is the meaning of horror to you?

I think we know a scary story when we hear it or read it, when it quickens our breathing and causes us to leave the lights on after dark. But what really makes a story scary when we’re crafting it? Is there a way to consciously figure this out as we put it on the page?

I think so. I think the first step is dealing with a topic that scares you. If we don’t feel the fear, we can’t expect others to feel it or respond to it authentically. We have to deal with topics that scare us in order to most effectively communicate that fear. What scares you? Is it being alone? Being trapped? Getting lost?

Find something that really disturbs you, and you’ve got a good start. Think about the stuff that keeps you awake at night. You’ve just got to be willing to really force yourself to examine it. You have to scare yourself before you can scare anyone else.

MEGAN SHEPHERD. Autora de obras como Naturaleza Salvaje y Her Dark Curiosity.

What is the meaning of horror to you?

Ironically, I try to stay away from horror movies and books...one of the downsides of having a rich imagination is that it's all too easy to imagine awful things as it is pleasant fantasies. Once an image is in my head, it's very hard for me to get it out again. And yet, part of me is absolutely fascinated by scary stories. Ever since I was a kid, I loved hearing ghost stories and scaring my friends at sleepovers. So I try to get my horror fix without actually having to be too close to it: instead of watching horror movies, I'll read the online synopses. I get friends to read scary books and tell me what happens.

Ever since I was little, I've had a really active dreamlife. I can usually remember my dreams, and often they're cinematic and action-packed, and often they are frightening or disturbing. I still remember nightmares I had when I was five years old, because they left such a strong emotional mark. People like to think children are innocent and sweet, but when you look at what most average children dream about, it's terrifying stuff! And what's most frightening is that it comes from within our own heads...who knew that we all have those monsters and zombies and ax-murderers buried deep in our subconsciouses? I think that's the real meaning of horror to me. Knowing that these dark images and ideas are inside all of us, though we go about our lives pretending like they aren't.

Mis arrebatadores, gracias por compartir estos días aterradores conmigo y thank you, Laura and Megan, for your generous company.

Interesting interviews but I must admit, Babel, that this is not the kind of book I enjoy reading.
