Colette Gale: entrevista y sorteo / Interview + giveaway (INT)

Mis queridos arrebatadores, me hace muy feliz poder conectar con autores tras leer sus obras. El año pasado descubrí a COLETTE GALE, con dos romances muy hot de los que os hablé en las reseñas de El señor de Montecristo y Desenmascarado. La autora ha sido muy generosa y amable al concederme una entrevista, además de ofrecer un ejemplar firmado en inglés de MASTER (El señor de Montecristo) para un lector afortunado. ¿Os animáis?

How did you come up with the idea for Seducing the Classics?

¿Cómo se te ocurrió la idea de Seducir a los clásicos?

I didn’t really start with the idea for a series; I started with the idea of an erotic version of The Phantom of the Opera. But I’ve always been intrigued by “other-side-of-the-story” stories—where the other side of a classic story is retold from, say, the villain’s point of view (e.g., Wicked). But once I wrote Unmasqued,my editor at Penguin wanted me to do a second book in the same vein, and that’s sort of how the series was born.

No se me ocurrió la idea de una serie al principio, sino simplemente escribir una versión erótica de El fantasma de la ópera. Sin embargo, siempre me ha intrigado el tipo de historias que da una vuelta de tuerca al original, por ejemplo, contadas desde el punto de vista del villano (Wicked). Una vez que escribí Desenmascarado, mi editor en Penguin me pidió un segundo libro del mismo estilo, y así nació la serie.

When you were writing Unmasqued, did you have any different feelings or
impressions compared to when you wrote Master?

¿Tuviste diferentes impresiones a la hora de escribir Desenmascarado y El señor de Montecristo?

Definitely. When I wrote Unmasqued, I was really writing it for myself—at least, the first version. I just wrote what I wanted to read (I’ve been reading erotica for years, and cut my teeth on The Story of O, and Anne Rice’s erotica). So I started by just writing a bunch of erotic scenes based on parts of the musical and movie (I was strongly inspired by Webber’s version). Once I finished it, I did string it together into a story and I intended for it to be the first in three volumes, ending where the musical/movie ended—with Christine leaving Erik to go with Raul. However, when my agent sold it to Penguin, my editor wanted a resolved story, and she also wanted me to flesh out the historical detail and setting a little more. So the story became longer and more solid at that point.

When I went to write Master, I already knew what sort of book I needed to write—one with layers of historical detail, and one that followed the original classic very well. It was an easier book to write in the sense that I better knew how to structure the book after having done one previously.

Definitivamente. Escribí Desenmascarado para mí misma, al menos, la primera versión. Me limité a escribir lo que quería leer. He leído literatura erótica durante años, la cual inauguré con La historia de O y algunos libros de Anne Rice. Así que empecé por escribir algunas escenas sueltas basadas en el musical y la película. Tuve mucha inspiración por parte de la versión de Webber. Al terminar, estructuré todo en una historia y mi intención era convertirla en el primero de tres volúmenes, concluyéndola al igual que la película y el musical, con Christine dejando a Eric por Raul. Sin embargo, mi agente lo vendió a Penguin. Mi editor quería una historia resuelta y que desarrollara más la ambientación histórica. Así que eso hice y la historia se alargó  y adquirió  mayor solidez.

A la hora de escribir El señor de Montecristo, ya tenía una idea clara de la clase de libro que quería: varias capas de pormenores históricos y una historia que corriera en paralelo al clásico original. Fue una tarea más fácil puesto que sabía estructurar mejor el libro tras la primera experencia.

Will you write more stories in this series?

¿Continuarás escribiendo para esta serie?

I may. I’ve always wanted to do a Scarlet Pimpernel story, and perhaps even a version of Dracula  (though that’s been overdone) and possibly a take on Anne Bonney, the pirate.

Es una posibilidad. Siempre he deseado escribir La pimpinela escarlata, y quizás una versión de Drácula, aunque está muy trillada, o una interpretación de la pirata Anne Bonney.

Has any fan of yours ever suggested a story for this series?

¿Tus fans han sugerido alguna vez una historia para versionar?

Oh, yes, I’ve gotten many suggestions—some of which I thought would be so much fun (e.g., Captain Hook and Wendy, and of course many people have suggested The Scarlet Pimpernel and also some of the other fairy tales). 

Claro que sí, muchas sugerencias, algunas muy divertidas en mi opinión. Por ejemplo, El capitán Garfio y Wendy, y mucha gente ha sugerido La pimpinela escarlata y algunos cuentos de hadas.

If you allow me, I can't help but wish/crave to see these stories crafted by you in the Seducing the Classics series: Beauty and the Beast, Pride and Prejudice, Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde, The Scarlet Letter, Persuasion, The Scarlet Pimpernel. What do you think of them? ;o)  Si me permites, no puedo evitar desear que versionaras estas historias en la serie de Seducir a los clásicos: La bella y la bestia, Orgullo y Prejuicio, El Doctor Jeckyll y el señor Hyde, La letra escarlata, Persuasión, La pimpinela escarlata. ¿Qué te parecen?

Yes! Jekyll and Hyde, The Scarlet Pimpernel, and The Scarlet Letter were all actually contestants for what became Bound by Honor! Great mind think alike!! My editor and I went around and around with different ideas to do for my third book. I was really married to doing a Robin Hood version, however, and though she was very hesitant, I eventually convinced her to let me do it. I am very happy I did.

En realidad, El Doctor Jeckyll y el señor Hyde, La pimpinela escarlata y La letra escarlata estuvieron en el proceso de selección para el que fue el tercer libro de esta serie, Bound by Honor. ¡Las mentes grandes piensan igual! Mi editor y yo estuvimos barajando distintas ideas para el tercer libro. Yo me inclinaba por hacer una versión de Robin Hood, la verdad, y aunque ella no lo tenía claro, al final le convencí para seguir adelante. Estoy muy contenta de haberlo hecho.

How do you inspire yourself for the most passionate scenes in your books?

¿De dónde sacas la inspiración para escribir las escenas más apasionadas?

I have to admit, it becomes very difficult to write a new and fresh erotic scene. Since, when I write erotica, my personal benchmark is that every chapter has to have a sex scene of some sort—someone has to get pleasured!—except for the first and last chapters, it does become a challenge when you’re writing a 20-chapter book. :-) And you’ve written several of them. 

I don’t want my scenes to all sound the same, and it’s important to me for the scene to somehow move the plot along—either through character development, exterior plot development, or revelations. I’m still writing a love story (in the Seduced Classics series, anyway), and that is told through the erotic scenes—even if the scenes are not between the hero and heroine.

Tengo que admitir que a veces es muy difícil escribir una escena nueva y fresca. En este género, tengo la costumbre de incluir una escena erótica en cada capítulo (¡alguien tiene que pasarlo bien!), a excepción del primer y último capítulos, lo cual supone un desafío cuando se escriben veinte en un libro. Sobre todo, después de escribir varios libros ;-).

No quiero que las escenas resulten repetitivas, para mí es importante que cada escena impulse la trama, ya sea a través de la evolución del personaje, el progreso de ll argumento o mediante revelaciones. La cuestión es que estoy escribiendo un romane, después de todo, y lo hago a través de las escenas eróticas, incluso cuando no sucedan entre el héroe y la heroína.

What is your daily writing schedule like?

Háblanos de tu rutina diaria como escritora.

It really does vary. If I’m on deadline—ie, getting close to a deadline, because I’m always on deadline for something--I am writing in the morning, a stint in the afternoon, and well into the evening. I write my best at night, when the house is quiet and the kids and husband are settled in for bed, and I don’t have todo anything for anyone. :-) But when I’m not on deadline, when the due date for a book is at least a month away, I usually do business and email and research in the morning (I write other books under another name), run errands, do my household tasks, etc….and write for an hour or two some time between 8-11 at night.

Suele variar. Si tengo un plazo de entrega a la vista, escribo por la mañana, un rato por la tarde y luego hasta tarde. Escribo mejor por la noche, cuando la casa está tranquila y la familia duerme por lo que no tengo que encargarme de nadie :-)

Si no se acerca una fecha tope, sino que tengo al menos un mes, dedico las mañanas a trabajar, al correo y a hacer investigación para otros libros que escribo con otro pseudónimo, también a hacer recados, tareas de la casa... y luego escribo una hora o dos entre las 8 y las once de la noche.

Can you tell us what are some of your favourite books on your bookshelves?

¿Cuáles son algunos de tus libros favoritos en tus estanterías?

I read a lot of historical set novels and non-fiction, so I’ve enjoyed books like Memoirs of a Geisha, Beneath a Marble Sky, The Secret Life of Houdini, and historical mysteries. I also read some thrillers and contemporary mysteries. I read a variety of things, but generally don’t read paranormal romance or straight science fiction/fantasy.

Leo mucha novela histórica y de referencia, así que me gustan Memorias de una geisha, Bajo un cielo de mármol, La historia secreta de Houdini, y misterios históricos. Leo también novelas de suspense y misterios contemporáneos. Me gusta la variedad, aunque no suelo leer romance paranormal o ciencia ficción y fantasía tradicionales.

What was the first book you wrote?

¿Cuál fue el primer libro que escribiste?

As Colette Gale, it was Unmasqued.

Bajo el pseudónimo de Colette Gale, fue Desenmascarado.

What are your writing plans for this year?

¿Qué planeas escribir?

I have several books in other genres under my other name that are due, but I will write two Jane episodes to be released later in the year. I don’t plan, at this time, to finish that series. It’s meant to be an ongoing serial, and that’s how I intend to treat it. I would like to do another full-length Seduced Classic…but there are so many good ideas to choose from, I have been waffling for years. :-)

Hay varios libros de distintos géneros con mi otro pseudónimo que están a punto de salir, pero escribiré dos episodios de Jane para su publicación más adelante. No tengo planes de terminar la serie de momento. Me gustaría que continuara como una serie a largo plazo. Me complacería también escribir otro libro en la serie de Seducir a los cásicos, aunque hay tantas buenas ideas entre las que elegir que llevo años dándole vueltas.
